At the risk of called foucauldian, although I was never a disciplinarian, even before Foucault (it means reading Foucault) am skeptical about discipline. Disciplining at first instance is a power construct and regulated by power.Discipline is not at behest of commoners but it is created, controlled regulated and modulated by the power. In that very sense power creates and depends on discipline. Foucault calls it penopticism, which simply means that through discipline governing and controlling is very easy for Foucault- 19th and 20th century is the highest point of disciplinary society.
Discipline is nothing but creating a falsified uniformity to regulate and control the governing subject, to make the strengthening of power easy and unquestioned, drawing an analogy from there, in school, we are not allowed to question; but questions are already raised for us, and we have to just answer them in order to succeed. The success is to find answer within the frame of question produced and from the prescribed text and solution zone.Discipline thus deliberately kills creativity - the creativity to produce concepts and to be critical of one's own self.
School for me is the epitome of disciplinary idea and the most fundamental institution of discrimination and intellectual corruption. The problem is therefore the language the very economy of the language which produces school. The challenge is not to reform it but how to deconstruct it and create an open space of learning where disciplining and regulating is alien.
